U.S. Researchers Halt Second Hormone Therapy Trial
Medical Information The National Institutes of Health said on Tuesday it had stopped a trial of women taking estrogen replacement therapy after finding the pills not only failed to improve their health but also may have slightly raised the risk of strokes.
It was the second broad trial of hormone replacement therapy to have been halted in two years. In July 2002, women taking estrogen and progestin were told to stop because of the risk of heart attack, stroke and some forms of cancer.

USA National Institute of Health FAQ on Hormone Replacement Therapy
Medical Information Choosing whether or not to use postmenopausal hormone therapy is an important health decision. Until now, the risks and benefits of the therapy have been largely unclear. In the summer of 2002, the Women's Health Initiative Estrogen Plus Progestin Study announced new findings that begin to offer women some guidance about hormone use.

Antidepressants Used to Ease Hot Flashes
Medical Information WASHINGTON - About a quarter of women who stop taking hormone replacement therapy because of its risks wind up resuming the pills because of menopause misery, says the first research to explore how easy it is to quit. Desperate for alternatives to alleviate hot flashes, more women are turning to certain antidepressants, such as Prozac and Effexor, that can offer some relief even if the users aren't depressed.

Uterine and Stomach Cancer Risk Higher in Diabetes
Medical Information Patients with type 1 diabetes have a higher risk of cancer than the general population, a Swedish study shows. The excess risk is most striking for malignancies of the stomach, cervix and the lining of the uterus (endometrium).
